Direction of slope

Why is this relevant? How is it used?

Direction of a slope is called Aspect, and is relevant because it indicates in wha direction the hill runs down.

Aspect is expressed using the compass points.

For example, a hill that runs down (ie decreasing contour line values) towards the east would then have an eastern aspect of the slope.

How to remember

An easy way to remember aspect is that it is the direction you walk when you are walking down the slope.

Typically examined

It is typically examined by asking what is the aspect of the slop at a particular area or grid reference on a contour map.

Traps: be careful where north is expressed to be on the map. If north is not pointing towards the top of the map you will need to consider the aspect taking account of the orientation of the map that you have been provided.
